SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY
Accelerated scientific and technological innovation in our day has made it
crucial to research the connections between developments in science and
technology and society and nature. Science, Technology and Society (or, STS)
studies not only examine the role of science and technology on society but
also explore the ways in which particular societies in turn have affected
the development of science and technology. Undergraduate, graduate and
doctoral programs in STS studies exist particularly in U.S. universities as
well as in Europe.
In the Humanities and Social Sciences Program at Işık University, which in recent years has been taking great steps in becoming a world institution, students may select the Science, Technology and Society option in their third year. The goal of this field is to integrate the social sciences and science and technology in order to examine the complexities of today's "knowledge community". Unlike the narrow perspective of single disciplinary study, STS students have the opportunity to select courses that address the historical, economic, political, social, ethic and cultural dimensions of today's technological society.
